12/19/16 Do Now: The cell structure we were most concerned with in the Naked Egg activity was the _______, because….
(In the “because” part of your response, include the name of process involving water and its effects on the egg).
Hint: water passed back and forth across the cell structure with which we are concerned.

In class today we ate the edible cell models, checked our review packets, had formatives passed back, Quizzed each other on the review packets and practiced with Quizlet.

Do Today’s “Do Now” on your Naked Egg Observation page.
Copy and complete:
12/13/16 Do Now:

What is the name for the phenomenon (happening) that caused the egg to shrink after 24 hours in corn syrup (think back to Friday’s video)?

Explain in more detail what happened with the water molecules to cause this phenomenon.

See me for followup on the Do Now.

If you were out:
Do “Do Now” on your Naked Egg Observation page
12/9/16 Do Now
What do you think water had to do with causing the egg to swell yesterday?

Now, why do you think the egg shrank after being in corn syrup for 24 hours?
Observation of Naked egg after 24 hours in corn syrup.
———
Ask to see the naked egg, and then watch the video that explains what happened (click on this link) as it went from sitting in water for 72 hours to sitting in corn syrup over night.

Homework:
Tomorrow we have a formative on the organelles and on DNA (Spelling will count!) For tonight (12/8), review the notesheets that you did in class, and especially study the Quizlet list # 1 and Quizlet set # 2. Practice with the definitions until you can get 100%!
The Cell model is due on Monday, 12/19/16.

If you were out:
Do Now:
Using yoru resources, find the definition of quantitative and write it in your journal.
Copy and complete this sentence:
To be more quantitative about our observations of the Naked Egg, we could ______________.
Observations of the Naked egg (copy to your U2Act8: Investigating the Cell Membrane; a Naked Egg page).
After 72 hours in water, Naked egg 1 had a mass of 85.6 grams, and Naked Egg 2 had a mass of 83.7 grams. The egg with the shell still on it weighed 54g after 72 hours in water.
Naked Egg 2 popped due to mishandling by a student.

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

Homework:
None for tonight (12/6), however, you can work on the cell model.
———————
If you were out:
The Do Now for today  - skip a page in your journal so that you have room for two pages of notes (U2Act6 and U2Act7),
Write heading:
U2Act8: Investigating the Cell Membrane Using a Naked Egg.
On this page write a step by step procedure for how we prepared the Naked Egg.
Date each entry and write down your observations of the Naked Egg. (size, color, texture, etc.)

Check U2Act5: Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes Venn Diagram using the key (click here for the key).  This lesson should also be taped into your journal.

We practiced spelling Deoxyribonucleic Acid - it is easier to remember if you break it down:  De  oxy  ribo nucleic Acid (you had the underlined part already).  You will be having a formative on this and some of the organelles and their jobs late this week.

Friday, December 2, 2016

Homework:
None over the weekend.
———————
If you were out:

Copy and complete the Do Now below:

12/2/16 Do Now: Overall, if you were going to copmare prokayrotes(which includes Eukaryotes) how would you describe them?

In class, we described the details of the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and then came to the conclusion that prokaryotes are much simpler organisms than Eukaryotes.

We also started some Naked Eggs, by placing chicken eggs in vinegar.  As you may recall, eggs are an example of a really big cell. The shells are made of calcium carbonate, and vinegar dissolves them and causes carbon dioxide bubbles to be released as it does so.  The end result is that once the shell is dissolved, we will be able to see the liped bilayer of the egg cell membrane.  We will be doing some additional work with this next week to see how substances move back and forth across the cell membrane.

Finally, you will need to get a copy of the guided reading handout that goes along with our reading for pages 68-70, and join a reading group.  Those groups that are quiet and productive can continue, otherwise, I may have to rearrange some groups.
